True as af

This is the real one

The solution is to click the simplest button, like a simple wooden chalice.

lol I thought the answer was uBlock

Always look for the plain blue hyperlink that says "download"

Bad idea to choose the massive flashing green download button

Or look for the magnet link

The download button of a carpenter.

The one that matches the site's see the most, the one that doesn't contain the word ad, click, clk when you Hoover the most over the button.
Always open it with the middle mouse button and be prepared to choose it asap so it won't open more tabs.
Sometimes the first click on the real download button gives you an ad, so already ready your middle mouse button to come that tab.

Yes, gotta make sure to Hoover the button. That dust gets in the cracks

In this case, no. Make the choice like the chest game from Zelda LTTP. Then, if guessed incorrectly, the captcha process involves gathering the three pendants.

It's prob just a text link that says Download.

You chose.... wisely.

Trick question, it opened up a new page to download from they're ALL FAKE, go back to the original page.

Thanks Indiana!

And that's all you need anyway! It's like the other ones are designed to bait idiots.

Inspect element and see where the button leads

"This is the button of a carpenter."

The wooden magnet...

The solution is to block ads. Who the fuck doesn't block ads in 2017?

I've been blocking ads since the 90s (manually with a hosts file, after walking 10km through the snow, after getting up two hours before I went to bed, to lick road clean wit' tongue.)

Luxury!

The industry that I work in revolves around me making ads as well as running ads to stay being a business. If you don't want companies you actually like going out of business, you should consider keeping ad block off for things you consume and care about.

I've tried that many times, hell even Nexus Mods and Myanimelist once asked for me to turn off my ublock so I did, boom pop up windows and porn. No thanks.

No thanks. I'll pass on the shit sandwhich.

The tragedy of the commons

Because a few are exploiting it the vast majority are suffering for it. If it isn't regulated pretty soon it will become like TV ads, things only the nostalgic and tech illiterate will tolerate

The industry that I work in revolves around me making ads as well as running ads to stay being a business.

Wah wah wah. Don't make me break out the Danny DeVito speech demonstrating how stupid that argument is.

If you don't want companies you actually like going out of business

...then I should block all ads everywhere, making that toxic and malware-promoting business model die. If that's an industry you're proud to be in, then you've got a seriously messed-up moral compass.

...because all ad work is malicious and malware promoting? I'd love to see your stats on that one.

...then I should block all ads everywhere, making that toxic and malware-promoting business model die.

Then literally every webpage would have a $10 per month subscription, not allowing you to do anything for free without being subscribed. I bet you would love that.

Except that's not true. They all sell our info anyway.

They sell our info for what, genius? ads, without ads what are you going to do with that info?

That sounds like an r/EarthPorn title.

Forgot the part about "life changing" and "this is why I love my ad-blocker".

woke up at 4 am for the perfect ad block

Thanks!

I was already subscribed to raspberry_pi and retropie, but wasn't aware of that one!

Some people want to be partly the solution..you're solving a problem short term and creating a much larger one long term

No, I'm helping force a longer term solution.

Ad networks that slow connections, spread malware, and diminish the user experience are not a long term solution.

Ads aren't a part of any solution. The sooner people such as yourself stop supporting that shit the better.

Do you pay subscriptions to remove ads from services?

If I think something is worth it, I do.

Unfortunately the option of subscriptions are rare (the first I ever paid for was Deviant Art almost 15 years ago). Most sites rely on pushing malware vectors instead.

Luxury

Idk how to block ads. I also don't know how to stop using fucking yahoo. Someone help me.

In the search bar, type "http://www.google.com", then hit enter, now click on the first search result. You're at google! Simple isn't it?

No, I mean for a homepage. Like I open up google chrome, go to the search bar, search something, and it goes to Yahoo.

Download and run adwcleaner as it sounds like you installed a PUP. To block ads install unblock origin from the chrome webstore and to change the search engine check this link:

https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.google.com/homepage/search/sp-ie.html&ved=0ahUKEwinpabp3ObVAhUrD8AKHXxuC04QFggnMAE&usg=AFQjCNHJct-pmCqzuOalqWGGszcLi4KG_Q

Already tried that, that button doesn't do anything.

In that case, go to settings and change the search engine in the section that I marked with a red box in this screenshot:

HOLY SHIT

YOU'VE SUCCESSFULLY HELPED ME WITH SOMETHING NOBODY ELSE ON REDDIT HAS BEEN ABLE TO HELP WITH SINCE I GOT THIS COMPUTER

If only all computer problems were that easy!

Ha! If all computer problems were that easy I wouldn't be able to use them now would I?

There's a wonderful medicine for that, cures everything in one go. It's called "bleach".

D:

pours bleach on my computer Did I do it right?

Figuratively me

Name checks out

Even with an adblocker i sometimes get tons of fake download buttons

Really? I never see fake download buttons.

(Admittedly, I now block ads by running my own DNS, as well as using uBlock Origin on the desktop/laptop and Adaway on my my phone.)

Bro, do you even NoScript?

Nope. It broke way too much. I spent more time than I was willing to spend turning various scripts back on in order for pages to display or work properly.

I like the idea of NoScript, but it's real-world user experience leaves a lot to be desired.

You have to set the default settings to allow subdomains by default, that helps a lot, and eventually you white list all the important domains, so it works more or less without fiddling with it. But I agree that it can be quite frustrating to use :D

Perhaps. But then I have to whitelist sites on multiple machines (desktop, laptop, phone, HTPC) and mulitple browsers (Firefox, Palemoon, Seamonkey), and then do it all again if I reinstall the OS (which happens more often that I'd like).

NoScript simply isn't worth it for me. I've been there, done that, gave it up.

What I do to avoid having to reinstall all the plugins in firefox (I'd guess palemoon is compatible too?), I just copy the profile folder to the new machine, and voila, carbon copy of previous firefox, with all plugins, settings, passwords, certificates, bookmarks etc. Of course keep the backup safe because of sensitive data, but it's very convenient when reinstalling OS, and it's cross platform (at least Windows/Linux/macOS, I haven't tried on mobile).

I'm not trying to force noscript on you, just letting you know there's an easier way to restore firefox then manually setting up everything from scratch :)

How does one go about running ones own DNS?

There are lots of people promoting raspberry pis as cheap and easy DNS (perhaps check out pihole?).

I started by running FreeBSD on and old PC. (But use whatever your comfortable with). I'd recommend unbound over BIND (BIND is older and solid, but a pain to configure).

I'd do a web-search for running your own unbound server, or "guide unbound DNS" or somesuch.

My DNS caches, so it speeds up all searches within the home, and calls out to international DNS servers so it gets around Australia's block on TPB and others ;-)

i was so salty when no one made a good adblocker for newer IOS versions. i had them all blocked on my iphone 4, but now it's bullshit and i can't find anything that works any more.

Untrusted Hosts Blocker. Minimal isn't being updated anymore.

word.

Whenever you want bb

Time for Android then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

hahahahaha

no.

maybe if jail breaking didn't exist.

Use MinmialHostsBlocker or SystemHostsBlocker. The latter works fine on my iPod.

Fuck thats what it was called. Thanks bud your a life saver.

Please don't downvote this guy for his opinion

More like downvoting for his snide attitude.

Sorry for not being all sunshine and rainbows for fuck wits on the internet.

But really andoid os is just janky as fuck. Ive used it side by side with my iphones since day one.

Clearly you've never used a decent android phone then.

yea i guess the samsung galaxys s8's are pretty shit then huh.

Lmao you have mental problems

Well you said i never used a decent android phone. Sooo im just going by what you laid out.

Ya can't change stupid just don't bother.

What do you have against Android if you don't mind me asking?

Too many options make people uncomfortable, it seems.

you mean not enough options. because that's why i never switched.

I sadly had to go to school with a lot of rich kids, and the most common answer was "android is for poor people and nerds"... I hated that school.

The everyone has one tidbit is kinda funny to me. In my experience everyone has an iPhone and fewer people have Android.

I get why people stick with iPhone though, they're pretty user friendly and kinda hard to mess up software wise. Additionally if you have apple computers and other devices it makes sense to integrate them all together. It's harder to do that, in my experience, to do the same with Android and windows devices mixed together. It's a shame windows failed so hard in the mobile market.

Yeah compatibility is an issue with them. The best part is that the people who had iPhones or iPads had Windows PCs and they could never figure out how to make them work together.

It was quite amazing because it was a grammar school which is a lot harder to get into and thus you had to be pretty smart, but if you spoke to a lot of them about technology they knew nothing past social media. Kinda saddening in an age of technology.

But to top off the whole Isheep fandom, there is my cousin. He came into my room one day and looked at the PC tower on my desk. And asks "Where is the computer?". I looked at him rather puzzled and pointed at the Tower. He looked at me confused. He had genuinely never seen a PC as he had grown up with only apple products, he didn't know there are computers other than Macs. He was 14.....

i never once had a compatibility issue with any iphone on a windows PC, they have always worked with them fine and ive been using both. only my android phones has given me problems.

Wow thats kinda crazy that he had never seen a tower before! Haha home built PCs must blow him away. Don't Macs have separate towers on their more powerful models? Hadn't he ever encountered one of those before?

On a side note I'd love to see his reaction to a hackintosh.

He has only ever used a mac, so he thought the pc was in my monitor... His whole family only uses Apple products, the only none apple product is their tv.

Wow that's crazy. He's going to be kinda hindered I'm the real world, assuming of course his job requires knowledge of PCs. Having a familiarity with a variety of OSs is kinda needed anymore.

So you submit to stupid social peer pressure? That's dumb. Idgaf what anyone thinks about me. Aslong as i like myself fuck everyone else lol trust me this is the best attitude to have in life

No I had an iPhone 3 but moved to android ever since, i was one of the " nerdy" kids cause I didn't see the need to follow everyone else.

It just doesn't feel right to me. And i always was ahead of the features they provided because of the jailbreaking scene and mods so it was always kinda useless. So my android phone is now pretty much just a dedicated fire emblem heroes brick.

Purify?

Try using Internet Explorer Edge on the Xbox One. Not only is there absolutely no ad blocking there's no flash.

Be glad theres no flash, because its outdated and a big security risk. Somebody might remotely hack your xbox and you wont notice.

Also flash is so old and bad that 2020 flash support ceases to exist.

A lot of the sites I go to need flash also flash is updated pretty often, regardless I want my IE to not have ads.

Adblocking is possiible if you set up a pie or other computer to filter out ads before anything reaches your xbox. As for flash, most sites arent using it anymore because of said security risks. If you dont love to play flashgsmes or watch pirated movies in sketchy sites(most of them dont use flash either) i dont know why you would need flash

1Blocker is my favorite along with a decent hosts-file tweak from Cydia that also works for ads in apps and system-wide as well!

1blocker in a repo or the app store? I've just had this set up so long I havent gone looking for much.

1Blocker can be found on the App Store :)

Ahh I remember why I don't use it. Its not compatible with chrome. :/

Oh well :/

Np. Thanks for the tip anyways.

What's the advantage of running your own DNS server? It seems like a lot of hassle for not too much benefit. I already block ads via my lede router and ublock origin.

It blocks ads on phones, tvs, ... It also reduces the load time of a website, because all the ad servers are already cached in your dns server, which makes pages load faster, otherwise the browser still has to resolve all the ad servers and make requests there, even if the ad os then removed by an ad blocker. The best is a combination of both :)

I run it on a pi zero b flawlessly. Best $12 I've ever spent.

I run it in a docker on my home server :)

Check out pi-hole. Simple app on a raspberry pi

Or dietpi in virtualbox. Totally free, and runs happily on 128 MB ram

Or pfblocker on pfsense

What's the advantage of running your own DNS server?

Originally, it was because I was tinkering with running my own webserver, and I wanted to play around with running my own mail server. Being able to refer to each machine in my house by name was more convenience than by IP.

Plus, it made it easier to deal with that old IT trope, "It was DNS". The stuff I was tinkering with only applied on my LAN, not the larger internet, so using a real-world DNS caused me some issues.

That was about 10 years ago using BIND. Nowadays, I'm using unbound which is much easier to work with. I wrote a script to download one of those ad-blocking hosts files, convert it into a format usable by unbound. I run the script every month or two.

I also run my own DHCP server which recognises the machines that are supposed to be in the house and always assigns them the same IP. That way every machine is recognised within the house, and when I take my phone or laptop elsewhere, they have no problem connecting to other external wifi networks.

Now, ads are blocked for everybody (including guests) in my house, and all machines are easily recognised. Even my Kodi remote on my phone recognises my HTPC by name and connects instantly.

As a aside note, TPB is blocked in my country... but not for me! Most ISPs will block sites using DNS because it's so cheap and easy, but that's also the easiest thing in the world to get around when you run your own DNS!

Sorry but i don't believe you. These sites constantly change their setup to work around the filter list and many will block you if they detect ublock etc. Its impossible to have a setup that doesnt show ads, you can just block what is in the filters which a human has to manually update.

Sorry but i don't believe you.

Uh, ok?

These sites constantly change their setup to work around the filter list and many will block you if they detect ublock etc.

First, I was talking about fake download buttons, making most of what you said irrelevant. Second, I know ad networks are dynamic, which is why I regularly update my DNS block list, and why uBlock Origin and Adaway regularly update themselves. On the rare occasion I have a page detect the blocking block the page (once or twice a month), I simply disable uBlock for that site and it allows me to continue (with ads still blocked via DNS).

I'm not sure what you find so fantastic in what I said.

Its impossible to have a setup that doesnt show ads

For you, maybe. Don't project your limitations onto me.

The fake download buttons are often native on the site and require specific blocks. You dont have something that blocks that, most sites are the same.

The fake download buttons are often native on the site and require specific blocks.

citation required. That's simply not true, or they wouldn't be blocked by adblockers, which they demonstrably are.

You dont have something that blocks that

o_O

Uh, you don't have something that does that, and I'll say it again, STOP PROJECTING. Just because you can't doesn't mean nobody can.

If you have an example of a website where a simple hosts file or uBlock Origin can't block fake download links, present it. Otherwise, back down, and stop drawing attention to how little you know about this.

Ublock doesn't block most download links. You likely don't visit most ddl sites

I get two things from this response.

First, you can't provide a single example that supports your claims or negates mine.

Secondly, you know thins, which is why you've moved the goal posts and built a straw man.

I specifically said "It doesn't have to be 100% perfect in order to block all ads for me."

So not only are you falling for the Nirvana Fallacy as I've already pointed out, but now you're pretending that if I "don't visit most ddl sites", that you're somehow vindicated.

You can't provide a single example of a site that has unblockable fake download links, yet you're somehow unable to acknowledge that you're wrong. You're completely ignorant how ad networks work, how adblockers work, how hosts files block domains, how tracking cookies work, or how running your own DNS setup stops ad and tracking networks from even needing to blocked.

Nirvana fallacy

The nirvana fallacy is the informal fallacy of comparing actual things with unrealistic, idealized alternatives. It can also refer to the tendency to assume that there is a perfect solution to a particular problem. A closely related concept is the perfect solution fallacy.

By creating a false dichotomy that presents one option which is obviously advantageous—while at the same time being completely implausible—a person using the nirvana fallacy can attack any opposing idea because it is imperfect.

So disapointed that nobody got your refrence!

To be fair, I later had two people reply "Luxury!"

;-)

I was 100% sure that was going to end in "I hope that clarifies things…. but please do not let this extensive clarification distract you from the fact that in 1998, The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer’s table."

I bet you didn't even have Nintendo, you just poured salt on snails!

Didn't have no water bed, either; had to sleep on broken glass!

Dishwashing detergent, not salt, but yeah :-(

(Actually, my first Nintendo was an N64, but I had both a VIC20 and C64, so does that count?)

Well it's kind of hard to block ads on mobile without having to download an extra browser.

Well it's kind of hard to block ads on mobile without having to download an extra browser or without a rooted phone.

I have a rooted phone :-) Actually, I've rooted it to the point I've changed the OS! (Currently running Cyanogenmod, planning on upgrading to LineageOS soon.)

r/iamsosmart

Some websites don't work with adblock, they just block you from being able to sue the website.

Some websites don't work with adblock

Funny enough, they don't display if you use a blocker in your browser. They work just fine if you use a hosts file or block by running your own DNS ;-)

There are also ways around that, sometimes as simple as inspecting and deleting elements on the page.

Wat

I'm imagining somebody looking at their monitor through a magnifying glass, and hitting the 'delete' key a bunch of times. Am I on the right track?

The alternative is to download an extension

Am I on the right track?

Nope. Just block ads using a hosts file.

Pretty much exactly how it feels, yeah :)

I have several friends who don't use an adblocker because they find it immoral.

You have several dumb friends.

Let me guess - they also have 17 kids because condoms are immoral as well?

It's not my responsibility to support someone else's shitty business model. Not socially, not morally, and sure as hell not practically. You're friends are fools.

Do they also watch ever ad on TV, just in case the network misses out?

YouTube ads aren't malicious and you block them. Get off your high horse. You're just shitty...

YouTube ads aren't malicious and you block them.

Google ads are malicious, and have been for for years. Here's an example from 2014, and here's one from 2010!

You're a fucking fool for thinking google ads are "clean". No* ads are clean, and only an idiot would think such a thing could possibly exist.

Get off your high horse.

You get yourself out of the ignorance gutter first.

You're just shitty...

And you're a naive idiot.

I've not used an AdBlocker in all my life other than for trying it out like more than a decade ago. Never had anything happen to me or my PC. No viruses, no crashes, nothing. Anti-Malware never found anything noteworthy either. Every time the discussion about Adblockers comes up, people immediately pull out the most extreme examples that happened whenever ago, as if their PC would get hijacked the moment they turned it off. That's just not the reality, no matter how much you try to paint it like that. Its very unlikely you'll catch anything via ads on legit sites.

The Nr. 1 reason to use Ablock is comfort. You don't want to turn it off b/c its more comfortable with an Adblocker than without. All the talk about security and what other stuff people bring up (never comfort itself, of course) exists to whitewash that fact. I wish people could at least be honest and stop pretending that they're fighting for some high and mighty cause by using Adblocker. Same with piracy, really. People pull out all kinds of bullshit arguments to justify taking stuff for free.

How touchy and defensive someone is at the merest hint of a subject also gives away how insecure he or she feels about it. So ironically, a lot of the people using Adblock seem to instinctively know that they don't have the moral highground on the issue, but are still desperately looking for ways to justify not admitting it to themselves, because it would inconvenience them. And that is just sad. You can do better as a person.

☝️straw☝️man☝️argument☝️

Doesn't make it untrue.

Can I see some quantitative sources for your claims then?

Didn't you read? His anecdotal evidence of never experiencing malware from ads (supposedly) is enough proof. This link has just a couple of examples of malicious ads making it onto legit sites.

I'm sorry but if youtube creators want To treat it as a full time job, it's up to them to acquire funding by getting sponsors and paid subscribers, merchandise, etc. I'd rather pay a small subscription fee up front than have my eyes hijacked by targeted advertisements without my say.

It's absolutely our right to block ads, there is no contract I've signed requiring me to be subjected to that bullshit when I use YouTube. I'm not breaking a law nor being immoral by not supporting an intrusive, and frankly immoral method of collecting money from ad companies to support their business model.

It is immoral

Letting someone as dumb as you walk around uninformed is immoral too

I'm sorry but if youtube creators want To treat it as a full time job, it's up to them to acquire funding by getting sponsors and paid subscribers, merchandise, etc.

Exactly. Most of the decent ones use Patreon or sell merch, since Google is fucking shitty towards content creators and regularly defund videos without notice or reason.

My friend thinks it's sketchy and not right in the sense of superstition. She won't watch YouTube when I have my AdBlock on but the loss is on her.

I can understand that argument when it comes to YouTube or twitch, but in those instances you can whitelist specific channels if you feel so inclined (I don't).

I used to feel that way, sorta, maybe not that high of a horse, but still, i wanted to support the websites i frequented, giving them ad views was literally the least i could do. After years of this i had mostly learned to tune out all but the most obtrusive ads, which was a good way to get me to stop going to your site, so it didnt really bother me much anyway.

That is until ads started serving malware. Now using an adblocker is probably the #1 most impactful thing you can do to improve your computer security.

Just gonna leave this here.

http://www.networkworld.com/article/3021113/security/forbes-malware-ad-blocker-advertisements.html

Fortune magazine has a obligation to not infect its users, regardless of the outside ad network excuse.

So they're pirating things but find adblocking immoral? Ok

What's immoral is designing your ads to hijack web browser functionality, or designing them to prey on the technologically illiterate (like with the download buttons).

The second it becomes illegal to run this bullshit out on websites, or they all decide to fix it on their own, I'll turn my ad blocker off. It's less of an annoyance fix, and more of a necessity.

Ok but whitelisting is a thing.

What I love is some particular ad that pops up with a blue screen error, and with other message with a women speaking to me all the time, When you try to close the pop-up, it blocks the window, saying WINDOWS ERROR OMG CALL THIS TELF. The worst part is that I am on a Mac.

I don't have friends because they find me immoral.

The solution is just to click on the magnet.

Or copy the hash.

Downloading .torrent files is so 2010.

What's better to watch in 1080p ?

You so 2000 and late I'm so 3000 and great

Boom boom pow?

Pornolab is knocking your door...

And what is 2017?? Streaming?

Streaming has it's purposes, but I mean you can stream with a torrent implying your torrent client isnt shit.

Also, you'll never find high bitrate 1080p links via stream sites.

How does Tixati compare to deluge?

Deluge is perfectly fine, I just like Tixati because of it's interface honestly. Tixati can ignore specific IPs from a list per torrent from connecting, or set speed caps per IP. Mainly to cut off heavy bandwidth drawing IPs, at least until you've downloaded the file and are ready to seed it, if you so wish.

As seen here: http://i.imgur.com/6B08uin.jpg

Notice the red IPs in the peer list, those are leechers or seeders that I have "ignored" by right clicking on the IP and selecting as such, shown in the visible right click drop down menu sitting over the peer list. I often do this to all IPs except one seeder that can hit my max download speed. I leave it like this until completion, for the quickest possible way to download a torrent. Not many clients give that much control over IPs, at least that easily.

It also is completely customisable in terms of layout and coloring, or can just take whatever your windows theme is set up as, as it has done in my linked pic.

I mostly wish there was a simple program to download new torrents as they appear, unzip them and apply proper consistent naming

I tried making it all work a couple years ago but it was too much maintenance and too complicated. I used couchpotato and sickbeard but there were always bugs to deal with :'(

i thought most torrent clients had sequential downloading options? hell, i used it on Kazaa back in the day. but i do like tixati, just because of it's minimalist interface.

Yeah, a good couple do. It's kinda seen as a dick move to download sequentially though.

Doesn't popcorn time or whatever it's called stream a torrent?

Magnet links is what I meant... but yeah maybe people just stream nowadays too.

That's what I do. I haven't downloaded a torrent in years.

It takes like two minutes to find and download a 1080p torrent but ass fucking forever to find a website and a working link to he new episode of Twin Peaks that's in dog shit free stream quality

That's what I'm saying....

qBittorrent's built in search engine will find you basically anything you want that's on public trackers.

I thought the solution was adblock

issa comic

Why ppl is so retarded? Even when I was like 7 years old i knew without even using them much which download button was the real one, and even then just use a fucking adblock dear god -.-

Who rained on your parade?

Who shat on his cornflakes?

Who misplaced his super suit?

Who pissed in his chips?

Who parked their car on his sandwich?

Last fake download button I clicked took me to some realy bad porn

Do you have a link for that? I want to assess how bad it was for educational purposes

Ugh, those disgusting ex girlfriend porno sites!! Which one, though????

as in, weird shit, or bad quality, or lame? we need details here.

Just really shit everything the cameraman was a massive douche allways talking about how he could do it better when there was sound when there wernt was the fakest orgasm s you could hear

Like take a seat right over there porn, or the actress had bad acting porn?.

That's a win in my book

bad porn

i don't know man, maybe it was really bad

Don't talk about my mum like that.

The only SOLUTION: - have a really good adblocker & - click the simplest looking , centrally placed and website theme matching download button.

This was more problematic in the early 2000's, No adblockers and nothing ever matched the websites theme.

Brave browser has a good built in ad blocker. They also do not have any sort of ad white list for ads. You can choose to disable it for certain sites.

What ad blocker do you recommend?

Most people prefer Ublock origin due to its low system resource usage, so I recommend it for you but I prefer adblock plus for myself as it breaks least number of sites I use as compared to others.

Dude...did you just assume my PCs specs?

But in all seriousness thank you. As it is about 5 years old now it's past due for a update in hardware. For now I shall use the latter

no man, I would never do that. Its just the common pirate's chioce.

Oh my bad, party on Bro and stay PC.

uBlock Origin is best

Its usually just the word "Download" with blue letters.

Ublock origin is the tits so far.

Also hover over the image and in the bottom left it will tell you where it downloads from.

Also, be careful of URL shorteners. I don't think there is a means to see those until you are redirected. Additionally, some hosts may have several domains, which is an additional pain.

Depends. If you see a bit.ly url simply copy it and paste it on your browser with a plus sign at the end.

E.g bit.ly/abcedf+

It will tell you where the link is taking you.

If you inspect the page the HTML will tell you too and show you which button you're looking at

JS can manipulate that after you click the link, before the page starts loading.

That's interesting! I'm just starting to get back into front end web Dev. Had an internship working with rails and backend but haven't done much front end

Yeah, it's sneaky.

So, you have an on click event available. You can target your link via a class or ID.

Have the page render the HTML with the link you want them to see, but then, in your JS, you can do something like,

$('a.alter-link').on('click', function(e) {
e.preventDefault();
document.location.href = 'https://reddit.com';
});

(Need jquery for this example, and I'm on my phone so not 100% sure if it works. But that's the gist of it.

Any link with the class alter-link, when clicked, it will stop it's execution and be redirected to Reddit

On hover, the user will be shown the original domain.

You cant trust that...

Goto google and do the same... they redirect you to a google site before any limks you click, but the bottom left just says the site you want.

I was on a site one where the buttons both matched the page theme but one button linked to the actual download another linked to a download with the same exact file name but once you install it it was some app store thing.

**E *V I *L *V *I *L

Or you could just use Chrome to hover view the url

Get outta here with that common sense

That may just display the target, but perform a different redirection.

I think there are pages that show you where the link redirects, like VirusTotal I think.

o_O

Just like every other browser I've used since 1993.

Chrome isn't special, unless you count it's maker being responsible for all those ads in the first place.

Or learn how to fucking pirate? Right click the fucking magnet link, "Copy link address" and put it in a bittorrent.

Somebody took a bunch of time to tie in IJ to some shitty drawing and its not even how it works.....

Was this made by a fucking 60 year old?

I don't torrent at all, and never have any problems finding what I want to download.

Maybe...

I just saw it on /r/funny so I pirated it to post it here.

Standard disclaimer:I did not create this content but I'm sharing it with all of my "friends" on the Internet.

It was already posted. But looks like people enjoy it. Check www.karmadecay.com too see if it's already posted.

I knew that it had been posted to /r/funny. That's where I got it. It seemed appropriate for this sub so I pirated it and reposted it here.

I don't see any problem. According to KarmaDecay it hasn't ever been posted to /r/piracy.

I understand repost Nazi's trolling the regular board but this is /r/piracy. I figured I'd get a little more leniency around here.

Haha right! Nice.

I've been a pirate since about 2000. I've used every form of file sharing that I know about. I've used usenet, I've tried IRC, I've used FTP, and I used BitTorrent on the original Napster. I was also an uploader on Rapidshare. I got my start before the mega servers like Rapidshare became popular. I started when a direct download was hosted by the website where you found the link.

Your reference to IJ eludes me and I didn't see anything in the cartoon that jogged my memory.

WTF is IJ?

Indiana Jones. Which the comic draws aspects from.

Indiana Jones.

Just use the info hash or look at the link on the bottom left once you hover over the download button.

But you have heard of me?

LOL, I've tried guiding a friend of mine through the process several times. I even set up FlashGet with my premium account for him and he still had trouble.

Your friends deserves to pay for media.

He's all about Cable TV now.

Hover the cursor over revealing the link in the bottom, use the one that indicates a file within and ignore the ones with ads. Differentiating will be easier.

Just look at the bottom of your browser.
Does the button's link look suspicious? Don't click it.

Omg.

I might love you.

Tried it but... it doesn't work at all, no results. Oh well.

check firewall blocking, does it work when you manually give it torrent file or a magnet link...

check if it installed python3 if you are on windows, it should ask when you enable search

Firewall off. Torrent files/magnet links do work (I had been using it frequently before). Python 3 installed (I installed it after it asked me to). I just get no search results no matter what I search for, even though I have a few plugins installed (the ones that came with the program).

strange, you updated the plugins too I assume, since its shown in the video

holy crap. I've used qbittorrent for years and never even gave the search thing a second thought, this looks awesome though.

Thanks

As IF! This whole time I've been doing it like a total mong.

Can't afford gold right now, so please, take this instead

By the way, there's a bot for this.

Just reply >!RedditSilver and it'll link the image and tell you the ammount of times that user has been given silver.

Oh wow! Did not know about this, thanks! ... !RedditSilver

I'm learning so many things

I will never be the same again. Thank you!

Oh my gosh I use qbittorrent but I had no idea this functionality existed. You have revolutionized my world.

Yeah, I guess he did finally get BitTorrent working with someone else's help.

He got the warning letter from his ISP and finally gave up.

What

You sir, just made my life easier. Thank you.

Wow, thanks for the tip!

Wow, now i dont have to deal with BTDBs site. Even with adblock it feels like its going to give my computer cancer.

Sonarr has a similar search function, and you can set up Sonarr to automatically download shows.

I though you had to use a downloaded with sonarr? I use sab

He's just saying Sonarr does the automation of the searching and file acquisition, then sab or whatever downloads it.

seems like the availability of good torrents isn't what it was a few years ago

It's not quite what it used to be but I still have little trouble finding what I need. Between TPB, RARBG, Demonoid which is back in a big way, and if all else fails a run through Torrentz2. All public trackers, but it sometimes takes some google-fu to get you there.

Get serious about torrenting and go to private trackers. Trust me, it's worth it.

I've been torrenting for fifteen years and haven't been on a private tracker since oink went down. I get by just fine.

It is not. Not by a longshot. Streaming killed most of the casual pirates, and anyone with a seedbox is on private trackers, and good luck getting on those without a seedbox....

I dont want torrenting to become a hobby, i want watching tv shows to be the hobby.

That's why I automate my piracy. NZBGet to download from Usenet, Sonarr to find TV releases and send to NZBGet, Radarr to find movie releases and send to NZBGet, NZB360 on my phone to add movies/shows to my watchlist, and NZBHydra to consolidate all the indexers I use into one search page. I even automated my porn with FlexGet. It's a beautiful system.

I wonder how that will change once Ajit Pie and the rest of those cunts take away net neutrality?

Im digitally doomsday prepping for that. My plex library is up to about 15% of netflix in terms of # of shows and movies.

I'm at about 35 percent the number of movies of Netflix and around 10 percent on number of shows. Plex is love, Plex is life.

That's actually pretty impressive.

Not really when you see how low netflixs numbers actually are, 1500/6000. Theres a reason they obfuscate things by listing the same movie in 10 different silly categories. Im up to about 350/1000, although i guarantee my average rating would be higher than netflixs.

Or maybe not...

https://i.redd.it/qfd7z06fmwfz.png

I'm digitally doomsday prepping for that.

I need to do the same. Like /u/Cyno01 said... streaming kinda made pirating feel like a chore for me so my digital library hasn't been updated in almost a year. I wasn't thinking ahead.

I really let my library go for a while until i discovered plex not too long ago. Its a lot less intimidating when you can just not worry about deleting the x1337 69bit 1079i ASS9.1 ENG DUB/Navajo hardsub OMGWTFBBQ )xXx_s3p1r0f_420_xXx part from every file to make your stuff look nice in folders since you can just throw stuff in a Show/Season XX/ folder and usually forget about it.

If space is an issue, hard drive prices are still dropping, but like all computer hardware nowadays it seems, not as quickly as they used to. Everybody over at /r/DataHoarder is buying WD 8tb externals for $200 and shucking them for a warantyless 8tb WD red. Compared to $275 for the bare drive with a 3yr warranty. So $50 for RAID5, which is probably the better option anyway.

Do you use cloud based storage?

Nope, all local. Im considering paying for plex pass, but i havent really looked into it enough to know if its worth bothering for me.

Between VPN, Netflix, Hulu, Prime, and HBO, i feel like my cord cutting costs are starting to creep back up and maybe i should embrace piracy more and cut HBO if im gonna start paying for Plex since their service is bad enough ive been pirating GoT every week anyway.

I quit Netflix when they wouldn't let me connect with VPN, and I never had Hulu or HBO. I use /r/BestOfStreamingVideo type sites. I worry that they'll get hit hard if and when net neutrality is dismantled. What sort of hard drive space do you have to store all of that?

Im looking to get another 8tb drive soon, but actually its not too bad, all the TV shows are about 5tb and all the movies about 3tb. As long as youve got devices that can play it (roku is what id recommend if you dont have a current gen game console), ive been downloading (and redownloading) everything in HEVC/x265, which is just insanely impressive compression. Im replacing old mono 360p xvid vhs rip avis with 5.1 1080p hevc bd rip mkvs that are the same file size.

Although older stuff is harder to find in such a newer codec, so ive actually been holding off on older and bigger stuff because of that. x264 is still pretty good, but i cant justify 300gb for all 17 seasons of Stargate, or anything like law and order yet. Not when all of like Dexter and Weeds are only ~40gb and full HD, not until i get more hard drive space. Quantity over quality for the time being. And no Netflix/Hulu/Amazon originals as long as im still subscribed, thatd be a waste of space too.

and good luck getting on those without a seedbox

Good luck getting one with a seedbox. I have 500/500 seedbox, accounts which are months old on 2 decently sized private trackers along with great ratios on a few private trackers and I still can't get in to any but the most shit private trackers

You can get into private trackers without seedbox it just takes time and mybe some luck(know a guy who knows a guy).Btw public trackers have everything you need as long as its new for old stuff you are correct.

What the fuck? I switched from utorrent 2.2.1 (last good version of utorrent) to qbittorent like years ago because qbittorent supports sequential downloading, so you can start watching before it's done (basically streaming a torrent, like popcorn time does). I have seen that search button before but never ever clicked on it. I had no idea .... thx!

!RedditSilver

Is this really such a big deal for people? It doesnt really take more than a couple of seconds looking at a page to realize which is the right button and which are fakes

Who the fuck pirates shit but can't block ads? I get the joke, but it's not very funny.

It's about as funny as saying, "You must fuck, but fuck wisely. For as the true fuck will bring orgasm, the false button will leave you feeling awkward."

You don't have to choose from 20 practically identical chicks every time with only one of them not having an STD.

You don't have to choose from 20 practically identical chicks every time with only one of them not having an STD.

I have it. Doesn't stop the fake buttons and the ads that pop up no matter what button you press. Look for hard to find ebooks and tell me ublockorigin works.

Have you enabled the filterlists that aren't by default?

No, what would you recommend?

Everything but the experimental and region specific ones

Thank you, sir.

The solution is to use ad block AND right click and use "inspect element" to see what each button does

Or just click it and close it if its fake. Much faster.

Not if it sends you down a spiral of annoying pop up windows or a window that won't close.

You can close them quite easily if you know how.

It's always that one with less CSS than Reddit

Magnet collector chrome extension and/or ad blocking with pi-hole!

open subtitles is very tricky, you have to use big green button, but first you have to uncheck small checkbox under. If you forget it, green button will try to give you some exe bullshit.

Any good recommendation for getting subs easily?

subscene is pretty good

Bs.player seems to have a built in thing that searches for subs.

subscene.com

I use the built-in functionality of VLC Player or as a stand-alone solution SubIT (http://subit-app.sourceforge.net/)

I didn't know about this i use vlsub extention.. Is this one better?

Not necessarily better, just a different solution.

vlsub is built into vlc player.

subit is a stand-alone program just for grabbing subs.

If I just need 1 sub, I might just use vlsub in vlc player to grab it when I open the file. On the other hand, if I need subs for a full season of a show or multiple seasons, I'll chuck it into subit and let it grab all of them.

hope this helps

Yep thanks i'll keep it in mind

Also forgot to mention (remembered because I was just messing with it), I've recently started using Plex to stream content to my tv/tablet, and it has built-in functionality as well that pulls from opensubtitles.org and tvdb

Sneaky Fuxkers

Solution: USE TRACKERS. USE PRIVATE TRACKERS IF YOU CAN.

Yup. Start with /r/OpenSignups

I'm just glad it's not just me! I gave up trying to guess and started just waiting for my husband to do it.

There's another way of pirating movies without going on putlocker?

I do Usenet.

What's Putlocker?

A tube site that hosts movies. Was the most popular one for a while, spawned a bunch of ripoff sites. 123movies seems to be the thing now though.

I know I'm a normalfag for asking this, but what is torrents?

Its a method of downloading files where you can download from multiple people at the same time. So if there's 100 people seeding a movie (seeding means they have the file and have it open in file sharing software available for others to download), then you can download little parts of the movie off all 100 of those people at the same time. Before torrents you had to download a movie from a single person and it was slower.

This is how you get free movies when you can't just find them online. But nowadays you can just find them online most of the time. Still good for other things, I downloaded a bunch of sheet music yesterday.

So will I have to download a runner for torrents, or is it a website?

You download a client like Vuze or Deluge or whatever is popular these days. I was using Bitcomet like a dinosaur till recently when I switched to Deluge. Then you go to a website like The Pirate Bay. You download a "tracker" from Pirate Bay, you open this with your torrent client, and it downloads the file. If you want to be cool you can leave it open when it's done downloading and people can then download it from you.

Thanks for the info bro, 'preciate it

Getting into private trackers is the best. Check out r/opensignups you basically have to have a seedbox to maintain ratio though.

You have to download a torrent client. Personally I would recommend qbittorrent

With torrents the file won't work till the whole thing is downloaded.

That depends 100% on what file you're downloading and how your torrent client is configured. Normally clients are set to request more or less random pieces available in the swarm, but some clients can easily be set to download pieces sequentially. If the video files are streamable you can start playing immediately, most often meaning that the MOOV or equivalent header is first in the file, but this is different from container to container.

Popcorn time is based on this and "streams" video files over torrent.

Huh TIL. Not a problem anyway I can download a movie in like five minutes.

That kind of ignorance used to be pretty common before the Netflix era of legal streaming. People would dream up nonsense loopholes convincing themselves they weren't pirates, because that was reserved for those using that dangerous "torrent". Instead they would download Futurama episodes from shady Russian websites in terrible quality with hard coded subtitles, and acting like they had a moral high ground.

I thought it was probably the shittiest file host.

I can't even remember the last time I downloaded a movie. Those Russian tube sites are the shit.

To choose the correct button one must install an illusion blocker for the truth shall not be tainted by the trickery of the demons

cough Kodi cough

i hope that cough kills you.

nope, its fine! I hope you live long and happily!

More like if you choose wrong You'll be mildly inconvenienced for a few weeks until you stop being lazy and run malwarebytes.

Who downloads stuff?

Pirates who care about quality?

It's literally one of the top posts in this subreddit. At least you changed the title.

Piracy at its best...

Where do you find people who don't use adblock in 2017?

You won't find any ad blockers on any of the computers for employee use at Google. They hate adblockers.

Just hover your mouse over a button, and see if a link pops up.

Not completely reliable, but helpful enough.

So am I missing something maybe? Ublock origin and gomovies makes things so much easier... Nearly all these streaming sites even operate like Netflix with it's looks and features such as auto next.

Since having an always on or accessible internet is necessary I can understand torrents still. But I'd it is something I don't plan to watch over and over again it is just much easier to stream.

Ahh yes we'll hidden joke there... More like I was implying why does anyone have a download button anymore and instead just a play button on a video player... But yes woosh

Maybe not steal at all?

Piracy isn't stealing, it's copying.

Nah

A D B L O C K P O P C O R N T I M E K O D I

Solution, hover over it and look at the bottom left. It will tell you what the link it is. If nothing shows up. Its most likely an ad.

Install adblock first

Only the adblocked man will pass.

Jesus torrents and seeds to a godly ratio.

TIL people download pirated content from websites and not by reliable sources.

Also, if you have a legitimate release, they typically give you the md5 sum so you can validate it with the extracted file(s).

You youngsters got it easy....

I download Windows 2000 from a website link over a 56k mofem. It took about 2 full days with a download manager. I think it was about 700 MB since it was supposed to go on a CD.

Try failed downloads over DCC on IRC or when your modem corrupted packets on your BBS server with no fault correction.

I tried IRC and decided that it was more trouble than it's worth.

Corrupt files were pretty common back then. Pretty frustrating to spend all that time only for Winrar to tell you that the file was corrupt at the very end.

I mostly download TV and documentaries. I finally figured out that if I told Winrar to extract the files anyway and just keep the broken ones I could still play the video. Depending on the severity and position of the error it was usually watchable.

That's why IRC also had channels for requesting file pieces and why downloads were all broken down into even parts like r01, r02, etc. I used IRC for movies in the early 00s and could easily find out which parts were corrupt and request a known good part from a bot in a public channel. Then when I moved onto Usenet, I would still use IRC for the times when Usenet was missing a few file pieces. And now I'm glad I don't have to do any of that shit with torrents and a VPN.

Usenet and indexers FTW

This reassures me that I'm not the only oldster around here :)

I remember being the single source for all content at my fraternity in college as I was the only one who knew how to use IRC to get the goods.

I'll go ahead and date myself - this was early to mid 90's :)

BBS was my start before we had Internet :)

2 x 14.4kbps running two BBS (one legit and one warez/distro)

that's awesome :)

I was met with one of these the other week, trying to get Winamp for my new Windows 10 install....

I think that Winamp is the second most pirated program. Winrar has got to be the first.

.....It's not free?

Is it? I always got it from a pirate source.

I know Winrar is supposed to be sold.

If pirating didn't kill WinRAR, free 7Zip surely did.

Even UBlock won't always remove all the fake ones.

Melt your face off kek

Here's a trick. Hover your mouse near the download button and if it appear as if you can click it, it's most definitely an ad trying to look yet without the actual sized box

Or use Kodi....

qBtorrent has a search function so you dont have to go to any site.

Click the magnet button that actually doesn't say 'download' lol

Or you can use AdNauseamand click every single one.

In general, if you click and hold on a button you think is the right one, you can drag it away and see if an image or text goes with it.

If an image gets dragged, it's almost always an ad (but I've seen some really badly made sites that are contrary) and if text gets dragged, it's far easier likely to be an ad.

Otherwise, trust the simplest one.

Many times you could easily spot fakes then they made the whole damn page redirect if you clicked anywhere. Now I just use Ublock origin

Highlight the button. If it's a picture, it's fake. If text, it's real.

I'm ready to roll those dices! Still better than suffering the streaming or goddamn awful "legal" services.

Simple one is right one but not always...you must chose it from your third eye 🤔😅

I am so happy that I "learned the links" at a young age. It surprises me how many people still click the wrong link after I... link them.

Maybe it is due to the fact that I analyzed a bit of its code and I got fascinated by it (but also, there are very poor functions there). But I still use mostly emule and since I do not have to hurry (if I need to hurry, I buy something) it is still great.

Sure, the userbase switched mostly on torrent, but so far is still good ( that is: I still find what I need that when is not there, is not on torrent either)

the solution is jdownloader 2 :D

Meh it's not that serious. After a while you know which sites give the best speeds and where to click to the point you can do it in your sleep.

Please someone suggest a good ad blocker

Why everyone spams this?

Protip: hold your mouse over the download button and see of the little box that comes up says the file you want

Who rained on your parade?

I think there are pages that show you where the link redirects, like VirusTotal I think.

Sorry, something wrong with my ipad all my comments are posted multiple times

I wonder how that will change once Ajit Pie and the rest of those cunts take away net neutrality?

Well it's kind of hard to block ads on mobile without having to download an extra browser or without a rooted phone.

I have a rooted phone :-) Actually, I've rooted it to the point I've changed the OS! (Currently running Cyanogenmod, planning on upgrading to LineageOS soon.)
